Cytochrome P450 enzymes are a group of isoenzymes mainly present in the liver, which play an important role in the metabolism of foreign substances, especially the metabolism of drugs and poisons. AH is equivalent to the CYP2E1 subtype in the P450 enzyme system. CYP2E1 not only participates in the metabolism of drugs, but also catalyzes the activation process of a variety of precarcinogens and protoxicants.

4-aminophenol produced after AH-catalyzed hydroxylation of aniline is further transformed into a phenol-indole complex with a characteristic absorption peak at 630nm; AH activity is calculated by measuring the rate of increase in absorbance at 630nm.
